Ways To Reduce Landfill

The 11th Hour DVD

We’ve all heard the saying, “Waste not, Want not”.  However, our throw-away practices all over the globe are destroying this very planet of ours which was meant to help prolong our lives.  Landfill waste is not breaking down fast enough because of the type of ‘rubbish’ which ends up there.

Things like batteries/ mobile phones and plastics, to name a few, very slowly breakdown in the soil making it hazardous to our health because of the toxic chemicals they are made from.  It’s not just the soil that ends up toxic but toxic fumes escape into our atmosphere; into the very air we breathe.

Wall-E DVD sold on eBayThis is an ongoing issue which has been addressed over the years.  In 2007 a film called “The 11th Hour” gave cause for alarm to the seriousness of the plight our planet was facing.  Then in 2008 a G-rated animated movie called “Wall-E”, cleverly written and directed by Andrew Stanton, showed us all what would happen if our planet became totally trashed and uninhabitable.

Both movies are available to buy from eBay

We all are accountable for what happens to our Earth.  Today’s children need to be educated in Earths’ preservation; for the sake of their future and future generations.

Here are some ways which you can reduce landfill:

Reduce:

Refuse plastic bags by using your own cotton cloth bags when shopping.

Operating in North America, usedcardboardboxes.com sell and buy used card board boxes.   Schools, organizations and businesses which have 5,000 cardboard boxes or more have the option to sell those storage boxes back to them. By doing this it will significantly reduce landfill waste, prevent more trees from being logged and help raise money for non-profit organizations.

Re-Use:

Where possible, re-use what you have.  Use your own cup for coffee or tea at work instead of using plastic cups which have been supplied for coffee machines etc.

Use  cloth diapers/nappies instead of disposables. “OsoCozy” make unbleached pre-folded cotton cloth diapers and are sold at Amazon (U.S.).

Recycle:

Compost leaves, grass clippings and organic waste products to use as garden mulch or to fertilize soil.

Choose products which are recyclable or biodegradable.  Find out where you can recycle your batteries and mobile phones etc.

One U.K. online electronics store Jessops.com has contributed towards a national fund to assist U.K. local councils to make electronic waste collection facilities, instead of accepting electrical waste at their retail sites.

As a cash back service recycleurphone.co.uk offer money for some unwanted mobile phone models. You can perform a search on their website to locate the model number of your mobile phone and if listed it will show what it’s worth.   The few dollars you make will help go towards your next mobile phone purchase.
